2025 Call for SMC Chapters and Student Branch Chapters Start-up and Initiative Grants
Overview
The Membership and Student Activities Committee of the SMCS provides funding to Chapters and Student Branch Chapters to support local programming, encourage volunteerism, and promote society involvement. Options for grant funding may include workshops, chapter events for practicing engineers, chapter meetings featuring industry executives, outreach to get students at schools, design competitions, or other ideas.
Available Grants
Two types of grants are available:
- Start-up Grants (up to $500): Available once for newly formed Chapters and Student Branch Chapters within 12 months of their formation.
- Initiative Grants (up to $2000): Awarded competitively to support ongoing chapter activities and initiatives.
Evaluation Criteria
Start-up Grants are awarded once and upon request to all newly formed SMC Chapters and Student Branch Chapters within 12 months of their formation date.
Initiative Grant applications are evaluated based on:
- The quality of the planned activity for which the funding is requested.
- The quality of events the Chapter or Student Branch Chapter has organized in previous years. Only events reported through IEEE vTools Events will be considered.
Eligible Chapters or Student Branch Chapters will receive details on the grant process, including options for direct fund transfer or reimbursement through the standard IEEE procedures.
Reporting Requirements
Chapters or Student Branch Chapters that receive a grant must submit an Activity Report within 30 days of the event's completion. The report should include photos of the event and a description of the activity
Reports may be featured in the SMC magazine, website, and/or eNewsletter.
Proposal Submission
Grants can be requested twice annually:
- April 1 – Grant Submission #1 Deadline
- April 15 – Notification #1 of Approval/Rejection
- July 1 – Grant Submission #2 Deadline
- July 15 – Notification #2 of Approval/Rejection
