Awards

The Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society recognizes outstanding members and volunteers and their significant achievements by the presentation of a number of awards. The awards are intended for SMC Society members, volunteers, and outstanding contributors having substantial involvement with the SMC Society, its fields of interest, publications, conferences, and other activities. Forms

The nomination deadline for Norbert Wiener Award, Lotfi A. Zadeh Pioneer Award, and Joseph G. Wohl Outstanding Career Award has been closed (July 15, 2024).
We would greatly appreciate receiving your nominations for all other awards by July 31, 2024 to allow due time and diligence for gathering and evaluating the nomination material for all nominees.

Award Selection Process

  1. The Awards Chair forms an Awards Committee consisting of past presidents and members from the SMC Society Board of Governors to evaluate the nominations. Recipients of the Norbert Wiener Award and the Lotfi A. Zadeh Pioneer Award accept their award in person and are expected to commit to presenting a keynote speech about her/his research at the annual IEEE SMC Society flagship conference in October of the year following acceptance of the award.
  2. The Awards Chair posts a Call for Nominations on the SMC Society website. Nominations are due by July 15, 2024.
  3. Editors-in-Chief of the SMC Transactions are invited to submit nominations for the Best Associate Editor Award and the Andrew P. Sage Best Transactions Paper Award.
  4. The Technical Program Track Co-Chairs of the current IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics are invited to submit nominations for the Franklin V. Taylor Memorial Award and the and the Best Student Paper Award.
  5. Vice Presidents for Systems Science and Engineering, Human-Machine Systems, and Cybernetics are invited to submit nominations for the Most Active SMC Technical Committee Award.
  6. The Vice President for Membership and Student Activities and the Chapter Coordinators are invited to submit nominations for the Outstanding SMC Chapter Award.
  7. After receiving nominations and supporting information, the Awards Committee evaluates and selects the awardees. Members of the Awards Committee are not eligible for awards for which they participate in the selection process. While members of the Award Committees are encouraged to solicit nominations, they should not be involved in preparing or submitting nominations. Members of the IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Organizing Committee are not eligible to serve on the subcommittees for selecting the finalists and winners of the two conference best paper awards. Voting members of the SMC Society Board of Governors are not eligible for awards, except the: 1) Outstanding Contribution Award and 2) Meritorious Service Award.
