AI-Based Smart Manufacturing Systems

Our Goal

The short-term goal of the proposed TC on AISMS includes organizing the AISMS related special issues in the premier IEEE Transactions, establishing new conferences and workshops, technically co-sponsoring conferences and workshops, proposing special sessions and presenting tutorials and panel discussion in the existing conferences or workshops. Some example of target journals and conferences are IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems, IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, and IEEE SMC Magazine.

As mentioned before, we recognize the potential overlaps with some of the existing TCs such as TC on Intelligent Green Production Systems and TC on Intelligent Industrial Systems in the SMC Society. Therefore, we plan to organize a joint special session at annual SMC confrences on a topic of interests to more than one TCs including our proposed TC on SMS. Based on that, we also plan to organize more joint activities on workshops, conference special sessions and journal special issues in the future to achieve a win-win relationship among multiple TCs.

In the very recent past, we have successfully organized or participated in the special issues and special sessions as follows.

  • Session on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Sustainable Manufacturing Automation, the 17th IEEE International Conference on Networking, Sensing and Control (ICNSC), Nanjing, China, October 30-November 2, 2020 (hybrid). SMCS financially-sponsored.
  • Session on Cloud-Edge Collaborative Computing in Green Industrial Internet of Things, 2020 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Toronto, Canada (virtual).
  • Workshop on “Robots Building Robots. Digital Manufacturing and Human-centered Automation for Building Consumer Robots”, 2020 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), Las Vegas, NV, USA, Oct. 2020 (virtual).
  • Workshop “New Frontiers in Smart Factories: Smart Automation and Human-Robot Interaction” the 2020 IEEE 16th International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE), Hong Kong, Aug. 2020 (virtual).
  • Artificial Intelligence in Smart and Innovative Applications, The 15th IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE 2019), Vancouver, August 22-26, 2019.
  • Planning, Scheduling and Coordination, The 15th IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE 2019), Vancouver, August 22-26, 2019.
  • Co-Organizer, Session on Automation in Logistics and Intelligent and Knowledge Based Transportation Systems, The 14th IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE 2018), Munich, Germany, August 20-23, 2018.
  • Guest-editor, “IoT-based smart and complex systems,” IEEE/CAA J. of Autom. Sinica, 2018.

At present, we are organizing Special Issue/Section on New Frontiers in Smart Factories: Smart Automation and Human-Robot Interaction for IEEE Automation Science and Engineering.

Long Term

The long-term goal of our TC on AISMS is to promote the fundamental research aspects in relevant fields and drive the transformation of manufacturing industries. This proposed TC will stimulate the SMC society researchers to participate in the interdisciplinary research of AI and smart manufacturing in the future and contribute to breaking the existing barriers among research communities related to a smart manufacturing ecosystem.
