Dear Readers,
Welcome to the second issue of the IEEE SMC Society eNewsletter of 2020.
As you all know, due to the recent COVID-19 pandemics outbreak, the plans for many conferences and meetings of the Society are continuously being updated. As such, we suggest you regularly check for news and changes on the events’ websites. Nevertheless, here is the main information collected in this issue.
It is with much sadness that we report the passing away of Irving Engelson, a great man and a remarkable supporter of our Society. We publish some memorial reflections on his impressive contributions.
This issue reports many news on the Society, including the results of the elections for the SMCS Board of Governors and the Report on IEEE SMCS and INCOSE Special Session/Panel in Bari (Italy) during SMC2019.
I am also happy to mention that Prof. Robert Kozma has been appointed new Editor in Chief for the Transactions of Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems and that the new IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence are being launched. The enewsletter also features the new IEEE Humanitarian Technologies special call for Covid-19 Proposals.
This second issue of 2020 also features numerous calls for papers and calls for participation to events and activities of the Society. In particular, October 11-14 are the dates reserved for this year’s edition of our flagship conference to be held in Toronto (Canada), http://smc2020.org/ and focusing on Human-Centered Systems for Smart and Connected Communities and Infrastructure. We feature a message from Prof. Hossam A. Gabbar, the conference General Chair. Please stay tuned on the website to check for organizational updates related to the COVID-19 pandemics.
Finally, the eNewsletter features a listing of several upcoming SMC events and reports numerous job openings and funding opportunities.
I look forward to receiving your contributions and making the eNewsletter the leading forum of our Society. Send us your feedback and stay safe!
