SMC Distinguished Lecture – UK & Ireland – SMC Portsmouth Chapter Event

The Big Data Challenge: From Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition Perspective

IEEE SMC Portsmouth Chapter hosted an IEEE Distinguished Lecture given by Prof. Daniel S. Yeung, the Past President of the IEEE SMC and a Fellow of IEEE, who has worked as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Rochester Institute of Technology, as a Research Scientist in the General Electric Corporate Research Center, and as a System Integration Engineer at TRW, all in the United States. He was the chairman of the Department of Computing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, and a Chair Professor from 1999 to 2006. From 2006 to 2015 he was a visiting Professor in the School of Computer Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China.

On 23rd March 2016, for this SMC Portsmouth Chapter event, Prof. Daniel S. Yeung delivered an IEEE SMC distinguished lecture in University of Portsmouth, UK. The title of the lecture is ” The Big Data Challenge: From Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition Perspective”. Prof. Yeung demonstrated the big data scenario and raised a natural key question of the feasibility of existing pattern recognition and machine learning methods applied in big data problems. Applications and experiments have been illustrated with concrete evidence inspiring the audience to consider new novel approaches and scientific problems. This event attracted about 40 students and researchers with different background and research interest. Prof. Yeung’s solid expertise and excellent lecturing skills influenced the attendees and contributed to a successful exchange of scientific knowledge and perspective related to big data challenge. This lecture started at 10:00 AM and ended at 11:20 AM, during which good interaction and discussion on the proposed topic have taken place. Prof. Yeung shared his presentation material with the attendees and it was appreciated by the participants. This event was chaired by Prof. Honghai Liu from University of Portsmouth, the chair of IEEE SMC Portsmouth Chapter and supported by School of Computing, University of Portsmouth.

Acknowledgement to both IEEE SMC Portsmouth Chapter and University of Portsmouth was given by Prof. Yeung after the DL talk. The lecturer also expressed his personal appreciation to the local hospitality and DL talk arrangement.

I worked in the Institute of Industrial Research before moving to School of Creative Technologies as Head of the Intelligent Systems & Biomedical Robotics Group (ISR). I previously worked in industry on large-scale industrial control and system integration projects, and held research appointments at the Universities of London and Aberdeen.
My research focuses on machine intelligence, multisensor fusion, fault diagnostics, fuzzy and qualitative reasoning, knowledge representation, motion planning and their applications to embedded robotic systems and web-based systems, particularly those approaches which could make contributions to the intelligent connection of perception to action.
I have been supported in my work by the Royal Society, EPSRC, EU 7th Framework Programme, SEEDA, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the British Council, as well as national and international industrial and academic partners.
