Editorial

Issue 2 of the IEEE SMC Society e-Newsletter for 2014 brings us many announcements and
news that should be of interest to our readers. We have a report about the IEEE SMC
Celebration Lecture Series held at the College of Science and Engineering at Fu Jen Catholic
University
, Taipei, Taiwan on 14 April 2014. This was probably the first time Fu Jen Catholic
University hosted an event in collaboration with the IEEE.

The Lecture Series was presented under the title of “The Making of an Academic,” in which
topics such as excellence and innovation in teaching, building a strong professional network,
effective research presentation, the quest for creative research, and the preparation of a
manuscript as well as research grant proposal are presented and discussed. The first Sydney-
Australia IEEE SMC CLS was held on April 17, 2014 at the University of Sydney.

The next IEEE SMC Conference will be held in San Diego, California from October 5-8, 2014. We
will have all details regarding the conference in coming issues, but at the moment the SMC 2014 website is a best resource for updates, you visit http://www.smc2014.org for more details. The Call for Papers for 2015 IEEE SMC Conference which will be held in Hong Kong is now available.

The SMC Magazine is now accepting contributions, and I welcome your submissions.

Earlier this year, I suggested that it is my intent to solicit and publish status reports from SMC
volunteers at all levels. This issue, we have a profile of Dr. Lance Fung. I hope that you get to
know Lance from this short piece.

Future issues will feature reports by technical committee chairs on some of their activities, call
for papers of special issues of transactions, tables of contents of forthcoming transactions,
introduction to some of our local chapters, and at least one guest editorial among other novel
features being planned.
