SMC 2013 Manchester, UK, Conference Report

2013 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics (SMC 2013) between 13 and 16 October in Manchester, UK. The conference theme was “Cyber Systems Enabling Knowledge Integration: The Smart Response to Emerging Societal Challenges.” The conference attracted 1179 submissions addressing state-of-the-art developments in systems science and engineering, cybernetics and human machine systems. The program committee undertook a rigorous review process which resulted in accepting a total of 835 papers.

The highlight of the SMC 2013 technical program included three tutorial offerings, three featured keynote speakers, the Norbert Wiener lecture, a panel session, 66 regular technical sessions as well as 54 special technical sessions. The four plenary talks which showcase the research frontiers of the SMC Society were:

  • “Cyber-Physical and Biological Systems: The Next Challenges” by Radu Grosu, Vienna University of Technology, Austria
  • “Challenges in the Industrial Control Area” by Kenwood H. Hall, Rockwell Automation Rockwell Automation, USA
  • “Building Prognostic Models for Cancer from Medical Images” by Lawrence O. Hall, the 2012 SMC Norbert Wiener Award winner from the University of South Florida, USA
  • “Predict, Assist and Assess Human Movements” by Robert Riener, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
