The IEEE ICHMS Shared and Cooperative Control Systems: Opportunities for AI Applications workshop will be held on 1 July 2026 as part of ICHMS 2026, the annual conference of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. The workshop aims to reinvigorate the shared control community, building on past successful workshops at SMC in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2025. It brings together experts and practitioners to exchange insights on explainable methods, assessment models, and application-specific advancements in human-machine systems. The workshop is organised by the IEEE SMCS TC on Shared Control.

Workshop on Artificial Intelligence Systems Ethical and Responsible Expert Recommendations (WAISERER)

The workshop aims at fostering discussion and bringing advance understanding on challenges and opportunities for AI topics in contexts and scenarios going beyond research laboratories and specialist environments. We continue successful themes from the ConsuWAIS project, inviting discussion on new trends related to AI and (manipulative) digital marketing practices.
These practices have been amplified through algorithmic systems and personalised recommendations, opening new business opportunities, but at the same time unlocking risks concerning rights and well-being of consumers. The areas of interest focus on (but are not limited to) the challenges of designing and implementing AI applications for ordinary environments, respecting user rights and free will. Tracking manipulative practices in real life, real time is a further endeavour. Obstacles might be commonplace and deficit of explainability of AI (XAI) systems in use are calling for thorough investigation.
WAISERER addresses these challenges looking for new trends and appropriate solutions in building advanced AI systems to safeguard consumers. The workshop is organised by the ConsuWAIS lab.

Collaborative Mixed Reality Digital Twin Simulation for Virtual Control Towers

The interaction between human and machine has always been a central challenge and a critical driver of technological evolution. In safety-critical domains like Air Traffic Management (ATM), the human-machine interface is not merely a matter of efficiency but a cornerstone of safety. Legacy systems are often limited by steep learning curves, hardware constraints, and significant costs.
The Mixed Reality Digital Twin offers a transformative path forward by moving interaction beyond the 2D screen and into an immersive, collaborative environment. This workshop provides a platform to discuss these possibilities, learn about the research conducted at ATMRI, NTU over the past five years, and gain hands-on experience in the immersive world of Mixed Reality.
The workshop is conducted in two sessions: the first covers talks and discussion on Collaborative Mixed Reality Digital Twins for ATM, and the second is an interactive session using Unity software with a beginner-level tutorial on building a digital twin and deploying it to a Mixed Reality device such as HoloLens 2.

Affective and Cognitive Sensing for Intelligent Human-centered Systems

The rapid evolution of machine learning, pervasive sensing technologies, and affective computing is enabling intelligent systems to increasingly perceive, interpret, and anticipate human emotions, personal traits, and cognitive states. The widespread deployment of IoT infrastructures and wearable devices is opening new opportunities for continuous, real-world human monitoring and enhanced human-system interaction.
This workshop brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and research institutions to discuss novel methods, architectures, applications, and evaluation frameworks related to affective computing, personal traits assessment, human situation awareness, machine learning, IoT, and wearable systems. Interdisciplinary contributions addressing multimodal data fusion, real-time processing, explainable AI, and ethical and privacy-aware approaches are particularly encouraged.
Special emphasis is placed on applications in critical and emerging domains such as healthcare, automotive and vehicular systems, smart environments, safety-critical operations, and collaborative robotics.

Workshop Proposal Submission
Proposals for Workshops at IEEE ICHMS 2026 are invited to bring together the community in emerging, active, and well-defined areas within the broad scope of humans, machines, and intelligent autonomous systems. Workshops provide an opportunity to explore focused themes that may not be fully represented in the main ICHMS 2026 technical program. Proposals are encouraged for formats such as interactive discussions, poster and abstract sessions, panel dialogues, and roundtable exchanges that foster collaboration and engagement.
Each workshop proposal should describe how the session will be organized, how active participation from attendees will be encouraged, how discussions will be promoted on the chosen topic, and—if applicable—how invited speakers will contribute to enriching the session’s objectives.
Workshops may be proposed for half-day or full-day formats. Full papers submitted to workshops will follow the same peer-review process as other ICHMS 2026 submissions. Accepted and presented workshop papers will be copyrighted by IEEE and included in the official conference proceedings, eligible for publication in the IEEE Xplore® Digital Library upon successful completion of the IEEE quality review process, and indexed in Scopus thereafter (subject to meeting IEEE indexing requirements).
Authors may alternatively submit extended abstracts (1 page) to workshops. Abstracts will be reviewed solely by the workshop organizers and will not appear in IEEE Xplore®.
Workshops are scheduled to be held on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.
Active participation and/or endorsement from one or more IEEE SMC Technical Committees (TCs) or relevant industry/academic partners is strongly encouraged.
The Workshop Chairs will evaluate submissions based on the following criteria:
- Relevance and timeliness of the topic to the ICHMS 2026 community.
- Structure and format of the proposed session and its potential to generate meaningful discussion.
- Experience and quality of the organizing team and invited speakers.
