On April 26, 2017, Professor Wang, Deputy Dean and Loi Lei Lai Distinguished Professor welcomed both Dr. Mohamed E. El-Hawary and Dr. Ferial El-Hawary, IEEE Life Fellows, to the Faculty of Automation of the Faculty of Automation at Guangdong University of Technology. Professor Lai chaired the first academic address by Professor Mohamed to teachers and postgraduates of Faculty of Automation entitled Smart Grids: An Intellectual Exercise or a Practical Reality.

Professor Mohamed El-Hawary introduced the smart grid challenges and opportunities based on the smart grid research hotspots, and analyzed the shape of the smart grid of the future, as well as presented key technologies related to the use of computer-based remote control and automation through two-way communications and computer processing technology to make the grid more intelligent. He discussed the future developments and trends with faculty members and students, and made a lot of valuable suggestions. He also mentioned that the core of smart grid implementation was the ubiquitous energy management system with functions to plan and control energy resources in a clear physical system in the best possible way. What the smart grid needed to do was to use new technologies to improve efficiency, safety and power reliability of each region and the entire grid, and to provide new services and new customer options as well as to achieve grid compatibility for new services. The professors and students of the meeting conducted in-depth academic exchanges with Professor Mohamed.

On April 27, 2017, at the invitation of the Faculty of Automation, Professor Ferial El-Hawary gave a report entitled Overview of Robotics Evolution Emphasizing Underwater Applications The seminar was chaired by Professor Loi Lei Lai, who is an electrical engineering expert. The relevant professional faculty and postgraduates listened carefully to the report and conducted in-depth academic exchanges with Professor Ferial on research hotspots of robotics, this report was introduced the evolution process of underwater application robots and analyzed the opportunities and challenges in the area of robotics and automation. She focused on the latest trends in actual underwater work, such as cable laying, salvaging, mineral resource exploration and surveying, oil spills and maritime accidents. She reported that knowledge of the exact location was a basic requirement for autonomous underwater robotic deployments.
The discussions during the events contributed to a better understanding of issues and opportunities for major new approaches to the areas of discussion.
