Professor Loi Lei Lai receives the 2014 Outstanding 
Contribution
For significant contributions and outstanding service to the IEEE Systems, Man, and 
Cybernetics Society, Loi Lai was awarded the 2014 Outstanding Contribution award 
concurrently with Professor Daniel Yeung. Most recently, Professor Lai served as Vice 
President of Membership and Student Activities and Chair, Distinguished Lecturer Program 
Committee. He also served as General Chair, IEEE International Workshop on Intelligent 
Energy Systems, USA held concurrently with the San Diego Conference. He was General 
Chair, IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, held in Manchester 
UK.
Associate Editor, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics: Systems and 
Transactions on Industrial Informatics In 2013 & 2014 he served as Organizing Chair, IEEE 
Systems, Man and Cybernetics Celebration Lecture Series to Northern Ireland, UK, China 
and Australia, Taiwan, Canada  & USA respectively. For the planning and organization, he 
received the Outstanding Contribution Award in 2013. He is also Chair, Technical Committee 
in Intelligent Power and Energy Systems of the Society.
He was Secretary of the Society in 2008 and, Member-at-Large, Board of Governors of SMC 
in 2009
About Professor Lai
 
Professor Lai received BSc (First Class Honours, the only one), PhD and DSc from University 
of Aston and City University London respectively. He is Director of Research and 
Development Centre, Guest Professor and Visiting Professor for State Grid Energy Research 
Institute, Fudan University, Southeast University respectively. He was Pao Yue Kong Chair 
Professor and Professor & Chair in Electrical Engineering for Zhejiang University and City 
University London respectively. He conducted high-level consultancy for major international 
projects such as Channel Tunnel between UK and France. He has given 10 keynotes to main 
international conferences sponsored by IEEE or IET. He was awarded an IEEE Third 
Millennium Medal, IEEE Power and Energy Society (IEEE/PES) United Kingdom & Northern 
Ireland Power Chapter Outstanding Engineer Award in 2000, IEEE/PES Energy Development 
and Power Generation Committee Prize Paper in 2006 and 2009, Scientific Chinese Prize for 
People of the 2012. His research interests are in smart grid, clean energy and computational 
intelligence applications. He is a Fellow of IEEE, IET and Specially Appointed National 
Expert in China.
