Welcome to the December 2011 issue of the IEEE SMCS eNewsletter.

First of all, many congratulations to Bill Gruver and Keith Hipel, who received special recognition from IEEE Canada for their academic achievements!

During the 24th IEEE Canadian Conference on Electrical and Electrical and Computer Engineering held in May 2011, Bill received the 2011 IEEE Canada Computer Medal for international contributions to the theory and practice of intelligent automation. Keith was the recipient of the 2011 IEEE Canada Outstanding Engineering Educator Medal for contributions to the internationalization of engineering education via exchange programs and systems.

In this issue, Wing NG reports the third IEEE SMC Celebration Lecture Series organized by the School of Computer Science and Engineering and the School of Software Engineering at South China University of Technology (SCUT) in July 2011. This event attracted more than 150 IEEE members, GOLD members and potential members from SCUT and other universities in Guangdong Province of China. I’ll complete my term as Editor of the eNewsletter at the end of this year. I would like to thank the members of the SMCS Board of Governors, especially Bill Gruver, Chair of the Electronic Communications Committee, for their guidance, and the Guest Editors of special issues and all the authors for their contributions and hard work. Many comments and suggestions from our readers are also very much appreciated.

Finally, I wish all the SMCS members and the eNewsletter readers a very Happy New Year of 2012!
