Categories of Student Membership
- Student Member
- Graduate Student Member
Student Member Qualifications
- An undergraduate student carrying at least 50% of a normal full-time academic program as a registered undergraduate in a regular course of study in IEEE-designated fields.
- Not yet qualified for Member grade
- The total cumulative period for a member to hold the Student Member grade and/or the Graduate Student Member grade is limited to 8 years.
Note: Student Members, upon graduation or upon reaching the 8-year limit (whichever occurs first), with at least a baccalaureate or higher degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution in an IEEE-designated field will be transferred automatically to Member grade.
Graduate Student Member Qualifications
- Registered as a graduate student with at 50% of a normal full-time academic program as a registered graduate student in a regular course of study in IEEE- designated fields
- Qualifies for Member grade
- The maximum time to hold the Graduate Student Member grade is 8 years
- The total cumulative period for a member to hold the Student Member grade and/or the Graduate Student Member grade is limited to 8 years.
Note: Graduate Student Members, upon graduation or upon reaching the total cumulative 8-year limit as a Graduate Student Member (whichever occurs first), will be transferred automatically to Member grade. IEEE Student Membership is required in order to become an SMC Society Student Member.Half year rates only apply to new members. IEEE Membership is required for SMC Society student membership.

How to become a member?
- Apply for membership using credit card online
- To sign up for IEEE SMC student member, select “Systems,
Man and Cybernetics Society” in the society list
- Your IEEE member number will be displayed in the order confirmation
receipt
- If you do not have a credit card, complete the online application
but choose the Print and Mail/ Fax with Payment option on the
shipping page. Mail the completed application with payment to:

Required reporting of student branch chapter activities
- After each meeting, the IEEE L31 form must be submitted to ensure that your activity is recorded and that your chapter remains on the active list of IEEE.
