CALL FOR PAPERS

2013 IEEE International Workshop on Intelligent Energy Systems (IWIES)
November 14, 2013 - Vienna, AUSTRIA

http://www.iwies2013.org

Workshop Chairs

Thomas Strasser, Xinghuo Yu, William Gruver

Aim and Scope:

The IEEE International Workshop on Intelligent Energy Systems (IWIES) aims at bringing together researchers from academia, industry, standardization and public authorities to discuss recent developments in architectures, concepts and algorithms for managing the increasing complexity in energy systems, especially in Smart Grids.

Today's power and energy systems are being transformed towards a smarter grid in order to cope with the large scale integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER), Intelligent and Controllable Loads and E-vehicles. Advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions and management concepts are key enablers of the future Smart Grid. In order to cope with the increasing complexity of the Smart Grid itself and its corresponding Cyber-Physical components and devices, new architectures, concepts, algorithms, and procedures are necessary.

The main objective of this workshop is to bring the research and industry community together to discuss recent developments and approaches in the area of intelligent energy systems, and furthermore, enjoy beautiful Vienna.

Topics of Interest:

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

. Computational intelligence and soft computing (e.g., evolutionary/genetic algorithms, neural networks, fuzzy logic) in complex energy systems

. Modeling of complex energy systems

. Advanced simulation methods for Smart Grid development

. Advanced control and optimization algorithms

. Validation methods of applications and devices

. Recent developments in SCADA and distributed control technology (e.g., holonic concepts, multi-agent systems, service-oriented architectures)

. Integration of (distributed) stochastic energy generation

. Algorithms for automatic market participation

. Ancillary services for DER components

. Smart grid control

. Intelligent grid participants (e.g., DER, intelligent buildings, storages, charging devices)

. Integration of DER devices, storages and intelligent loads (e.g., intelligent buildings) into Smart Grids

. Topic related to e-vehicles (from a grid point of view)

. Cyber-security issues in intelligent energy systems

. Advanced communication systems and approaches for energy systems

. Training and educational aspects

. Standard-related topics (e.g., CIM, IEC 61850) for intelligent energy systems and Smart Grids

Joint Activity of IEEE Societies IES & SMCS:

IWIES 2013 is a joint activity of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) and the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society (SMCS). The Technical Program is jointly developed by both societies. In particular, several Technical Committees of IES and SMCS (TC on Distributed Intelligent Systems, TC on Intelligent Power and Energy Systems, and TC on Infrastructure Systems and Services) are supporting this workshop.

IWIES 2013 will be collocated with IECON 2013, the flagship conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON). These two events will hold concurrent sessions and joint activities, but each will publish its own proceedings. Participants can enjoy both, IWIES and IECON, and receive both proceedings for a single registration fee.

Paper Submission Guidelines:

The working language of the conference is English. Submit the full paper (max. 6 pages IEEE format) as PDF following the IEEE layout requirements by using the templates given at the conference web page. Accepted and presented papers will be published in an IEEE Proceedings volume and will be submitted for inclusion in IEEE Xplore and indexing by EI Compendex.

The presented papers will be further screened for possible publication in IEEE IES/SMCS Transactions.

Important Dates:

Paper submission: May 15, 2013
Author notification: June 30, 2013
Camera-ready submission: August 01, 2013
Workshop: November 14, 2013
