President’s Message

It is indeed my distinct privilege as the IEEE SMC President 2012-2013 to share with our members on plans and actions of members of your executive and myself on items of mutual interest.

I am pleased to report that in January 2012 the SMC Society has welcomed five new members-at-large on the Governing Board for terms ending on December 2014:James C. Bezdek, Vladik Kreinovich, Sam Kwong, Chih-Min Lin and Xi-Zhao Wang. I look forward to working with each of these dedicated members during my term of office.

I am very pleased to congratulate the following members of SMC who have been elevated to the membership grade of Fellow of IEEE: Gerard Dreyfus, Xuelong Li, Huan Liu, Peter Meer, Jean-Christophe Olivo, MajaPantic, Konstantinos Plataniotis, Fabio Roli, Eugene Santos, Roy Streit, Edward Tunstel, Bing-Fei Wu, and Hao Ying. The Society will continue to strive to elevate our members to higher grade.

In February this year, IEEE has conducted SMC Society review, including society strategic operations, governance, finance, membership, conferences, technical activities, and publications.  In May, the Executive Committee of SMC met in Manchester, United Kingdom and discussed matters related to the Society’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. In June, we passed six-year Society review by IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB). Several of our Society operations have been selected as “Best Practices” by IEEE. This proves that our Society has been operated in a very good standing in all respects.

One of our major strengths is our global presence reflected both in our membership statistics and the locations of our annual conferences alternating between Europe, Asia, and North America. SMC12 is being held in Korea, while SMC11 was held in Anchorage, Alaska, with SMC10 having been held in Istanbul, Turkey. Continuing with this rotation, SMC 2013, SMC 2014, and SMC 2015 will be held in Manchester, UK, San Diego, California, USA, and Hong Kong, respectively. In addition to our annual flagship conference, we also sponsor a large number of regional conferences around the world.

This is a very exciting time for the SMC Society and we look forward to serving you. Please contact me by e-mail ([email protected]) with your suggestions for improving our services, including those for members from industry. I also would welcome to hear from you if you would like to take an active role in any of the leading volunteer activities that you believe would enhance our Society.

Sincerely,

C.  L. Philip Chen
