IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society presents...
2005 International Conference on Systems, Man,
and Cybernetics
Waikoloa Hilton Village, Waikoloa, Hawaii, USA
October 10-12, 2005
Welcome to 2005 IEEE SMC International Conference
– HAWAII 05
It is my distinct pleasure to welcome each and every
one of you to the 2005 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man,
and Cybernetics. The plans for this conference began back in 2002 when
it was decided to come to the beautiful island of Hawaii.
We at SMC Society have begun a new approach for our
annual conference, i.e., soliciting full papers only. We (SMC and Hawaii)
attracted 949 full papers, including 44 special session proposals. The
program committee sent all the papers, unsolicited and special ones,
to 3 reviewers each in a span of 12 weeks time. Over 2500 individual
reviews were uploaded into the web site of the conference. The program
that you are witnessing here is the result of diligent work of many
wonderful volunteers to help run this international conference. On the
top of that list are our two Program Co-Chairs Dr. Edward Tunstel, Jr.
of NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory/Caltech and Professor Gary Anderson
of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I sincerely thank the
untiring efforts of both colleagues and their program committee of over
200 members.
We hope that this conference will render not only a
beautiful venue and scenery, but provide you a very rewarding and innovative
technical meeting where new interests in Systems Engineering with emphasis
on our Conference Theme – System of Systems Engineering are discussed.
IEEE SMC has always been a leader in Systems Engineering among all fields
of engineering, be it electrical, mechanical, aerospace, etc. We hope
that the contribution of the IEEE SMC and its thousands of members would
continue to make a difference in systems engineering, cybernetics and
human-machine systems.
Aside from the technical program committee, many others
have spent numerous hours helping to bring this wonderful meeting to
you. I wish to thank Mr. Prasanna Sridhar, SMC 2005 webmaster who designed
and implemented the site all by himself and interacted with thousands
of inquiries of authors, potential attendees, students and the like.
The diligent works of the local organizing team, headed by Professor
Sevki Erdogan of the University Hawaii – Hilo, Professor Song
Choi of the University of Hawaii - Manoa, Dr. Tak Sugimura of the Maui
Supercomputing Center, and Dr. Joseph Ritter of SAIC Corporation are
all very much appreciated.
I would like to thank the IEEE SMC’s executive
committee peers President Bill Gruver, our Vice Presidents Julie Adams,
Daniel Yeung, T. T. Lee, and Peter Beling and our President-Elect Larry
Hall for their support. I wish to thank our distinguished list of keynote
speakers Prof. Lotfi Zadeh (UC – Berkeley), Professor Andrew Sage
(George Mason University), Professor George Bekey (University of Southern
California), Professor James Tien (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute)
and Dr. Firouz Naderi (NASA JPL) for accepting my invitation to come
and deliver wonderful keynotes. I wish to thank many individuals who
organized our panel sessions, among them are Dr. Bob Rassa of Raytheon,
Dr. Jay Pearlman and Mr. Paul Gartz of Boeing, Mr. David Beals of NASA
Langley Research Center and Dr. Chuck Weisbin of NASA JPL and their
distinguished panelists. Many colleagues took the time and made efforts
in their proposed 44 special sessions, I wish to thank each and every
one of them for their efforts. Last and by no means least I wish to
thank many students who have worked so hard to help prepare this meeting
from the University of New Mexico, University of Hawaii - Hilo and the
University of Hawaii – Manoa, among other institutions who came
in later on.
Enjoy this paradise we call Hawaii and have a wonderful
stay on the Big Island.
