General
Description
The
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Research Center
of the National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) at Hsinchu,
Taiwan is one of four organized research programs, sponsored
by the Ministry of Education and the National Science Council
of Taiwan, striving for academic excellence. The center
is established for the Academic Excellence Program -- “Human-Technology
– Intelligent Transportation Systems (HT-ITS).”
Specifically, the HT-ITS program aims at strengthening ITS-related
science, engineering and technology, in order to establish
a solid academic foundation, with two major features: brain-like
machine intelligence and very large-scale dynamic system
analysis. To achieve such a goal, the HT-ITS program is
organized into five subprograms, each consisting of both
fundamental research and application studies:
-
Smart Vision:Biological-inspired Intelligent Vision
Technology for ITS: Combining brain science and intelligent
engineering to develop biological-inspired computer
vision (e-Eye – electronic eye) techniques for
ITS applications.
-
Smart Interfacing:Intelligent Dialogue System for ITS
Information Access: Combining speech recognition and
language processing to develop intelligent spoken dialogue
system for accessing ITS information.
-
Smart Car:Intelligent Control and Intelligent Wheels
(I-Wheels) for Next-Generation Smart Cars: Combining
intelligent control, power electronics and network control
techniques to develop intelligent wheels (I-Wheels)
and intelligent adaptive cruise control systems for
ITS applications.
-
Smart Networking:Large-Scale Transportation and High-Capacity
Communication Networks for ITS: Developing and integrating
the wireless communication networks and transportation
networks technologies into the broadband wireless ITS
network.
-
Smart Agent:Agent-based Software Engineering for ITS:
Developing a systematic methodology for building multi-agent
systems in an incremental manner based on the notion
of trade-off analysis of agents’ goals for ITS
applications.
The
ITS Research Center holds academic activities, coordinates
research works among all subprojects, and is concerned with
analysis, design, integration, and development of associated
models, techniques, and theories. ITS Research Center is
constructing and building the infrastructure of the control/communication/information
platforms for system integration, verification, and demonstration
of all the subprojects. A full-scaled ITS prototype system
covering NCTU campus and Hsinchu Science-based Industrial
Park is also installed as a test bed for the ITS information/communication
platform. In addition, we are building the VR motion simulation
lab and conducting a research work in setting up the modeling
and evaluation of driver-vehicle-environment system for
traffic safety.
Some
Research Results
Research works on HT-ITS program have been focused on two
broad areas: Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS),
and Advanced Vehicle Control and Safety Systems (AVCSS).
ATIS:
(1) Video-based vehicle density/flow
rate estimation
(2) Biological-inspired computer
vision system
(3) Automatic traffic-parameter
estimation system
(4) Traffic simulation for
the ITS prototype system
AVCSS:
(5) Driver’s mental
work load
(6) Intelligent power modules
(7) Integrated intelligent
motor control technologies
(8) Intelligent vehicle control
techniques
