If you would like to be become a candidate for the position of Member-at-Large, contact the nominations chair (m.smith@ieee.org). A list of special committee and liaison positions appears at the bottom of the “Board of Governors” page on the SMC web site (http://www.ieeesmc.org). Using the “Contact SMC” drop down menu at the top of the SMC web site, send a message to the committee that matches your interests – Technical Activities, Membership, Transactions, eNewsletter, Conferences, Student Activities. A reply will be sent to you by an officer, editor, or committee chair.

Finally, there are possibilities to serve as an officer or committee member of an SMC chapter, providing opportunities for you to network throughout the year. There has been strong growth in the formation of SMC chapters during the past several years. The SMC Society currently has 17 chapters located throughout the Americas, Asia, and Europe, including five new chapters in China, Italy, Germany, and Hong Kong. If there is no chapter in your area, you may contact the SMC Chapters Coordinator (jeng@mail.ntou.edu.tw) for assistance to start a new chapter. Only 12 members are needed and the SMC Society will provide a subsidy for the startup. Also, the newly established Distinguished Lecturer Program provides travel subsidies for technical presenters to visit your chapter meetings. Details concerning the process for chapter startup and the Distinguished Lecturer Program are available on the SMC web site.

I encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities that the SMC Society offers for active participation.

Sincerely,
