Welcome to the June, 2005 Issue of the IEEE SMC Society eNewsletter.

This issue’s Features section carries some interesting research articles from University of Tokyo, Indian Institute of Technology, and Honda Research Institute Europe. We also have reports from two of our technical committees by respective Committee Chairs giving you more insight into those TCs. I also hope our readers find that the newly introduced “SMC Transactions Tables of Contents” is useful. In this section, the tables of contents of the latest SMCS transactions with hot links to the abstracts are given. To view the full-text of the papers, click on the link [PDF Full-Text(xxxx kB)] in the abstract page and use your web account information. Please feel free to send me your feedback, ideas, and suggestions on how the Newsletter can be made more and more useful. I also encourage you to get more involved in the Society’s e-Newsletter by submitting articles to the Features section, writing a guest editorial etc. You may also send us advertisements about the new publications, employment opportunities, or congratulating messages for awards and honored won recently by your colleagues among other things that you may think that fall within the scope of the Newsletter.

It is pleasing to see three new SMCS Chapters (2 in China, 1 in Germany) getting off the ground during the first half of this year. SMCS is endeavoring to expand its presence and activities around the globe and encourages new local Chapters including student Chapters. Required assistance from the TCs and financial subsidies from SMCS are available. Society Chapters consist of the members from one or more IEEE Societies who share technical interests and geographical proximity. Please use IEEE Society Chapter Homepage to learn more or contact me, if you are interested in joining and/or forming a new Chapter in your area. A local Chapter is a great opportunity for you to network locally enabling to work together and to collaborate with each other more efficiently. Learn about the SMC Distinguished Lecturer Program by visiting our society homepage at http://www.ieeesmc.org The aim of this program is to help Society Chapters provide interesting and informative programs to serve the needs of members of the SMC Society and to enhance their professional vitality by keeping them informed of new technological developments and applications.

The 2005 IEEE SMC international conference will be held on the Big Island of Hawaii, USA, in Waikoloa Hilton Village, which is, arguably, the best resort hotel in the State of Hawaii. You may read the Conference Progress Report following the link provided within this Newsletter. I take this opportunity to invite you to register early to take part in this one of the world’s major conferences in Systems Engineering.

Dorian Sabaz deserves a special thank for the design of the new appearance of the e-Newsletter. Thank you! also to Vina Wu and Sisil Kumarawadu who have been assisting me with the editorial works.
