- President's Message -

As we approach the end of 2004, I am pleased to announce the following newly elected and appointed positions in the Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society.

Larry Hall, South Florida University (USA) has been elected President-Elect of the SMC Society at the recent meeting of the Board of Governors in The Hague. Dr. Hall will continue as Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the Transactions on SMC, Part B: Cybernetics. Diane Cook, University of Texas at Arlington (USA), will join TSMC-B as co-EIC.

Vladimir Marik, Czech Technical University and Rockwell Automation (Czech Republic) will succeed Chip White, as EIC of the Transactions on SMC, Part C: Applications and Reviews. Mengchu Zhou from New Jersey Institute of Technology (USA) will join TSMC-C as Managing Editor.

We welcome the following special appointments to the Board of Governors: Publications Coordinator – Michael Berthold (Germany); Chapters Coordinator – MuDer Jeng (Taiwan); Technical Committees Coordinator – Hideyuki Takagi (Japan); Conferences Coordinator – Ljiljana Trajkovic (Canada); and Student Activities Coordinator – Anna Zyzniewski (Canada).

Following a very successful annual conference in The Hague with participation by more than 1100 attendees, preparations are now being made, under the leadership of the General Chair, Mo Jamshidi, and the Program Chairs, Edward Tunstel and Gary Anderson, for the 2005 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC05) to be held October 10-12, 2005, at the Waikoloa Hilton Village on the Big Island of Hawaii. Details of the submission process and deadlines may be viewed on the SMC05 web site, http://ieeesmc2005.unm.edu/. Please note that all prospective authors will be required to submit full-length papers for review. Featuring a technical program that provides a world-class forum for all aspects of systems engineering, human-machine systems, and emerging topics in cybernetics, a conference hotel that is a tropical paradise, and located on an island teeming with active volcanos, this is one conference that you do not want to miss!

I would like to conclude this column by encouraging you to join one or more Technical Committees (TCs), special interest groups of SMCS members that bring together specialists in a focused area of technology and applications. Their activities include preparing special issues and review articles for the SMC Transactions, organizing invited sessions and workshops at the annual conference and regional symposia, and developing opportunities for collaboration on international projects. Currently we have active TCs in the following specialties: bio-informatics, computational intelligence, expert and knowledge based systems, knowledge acquisition in intelligent systems, intelligent communications, machine learning, soft computing, human-machine interaction, conflict resolution, control of uncertain systems, discrete event systems, distributed intelligent systems, industrial applications, intelligent transportation systems, robotics and manufacturing automation, service systems and organizations, systems assurance. Please view the Technical Activities web page of the SMCS web site http://www.ieeesmc.org for further information on participating in the Technical Committees.

I appreciate your continued contributions as an SMC member, and wish you a happy and successful New Year.

Sincerely,

William A. Gruver
