Welcome to the first edition of SMCS e-Newsletter for year 2004. No need to specifically mention that our readers surely not be happy with the frequency with which the Newsletter is being posted. There are no many reasons for the difficulty of regular posting of a quality Newsletter but only a single reason that we are not receiving adequate contributions to this important publication. Therefore, I would like to repeatedly encourage our readers, SMCS members or not, to actively contribute to your Newsletter and to make the best use of it. “Activity Reports” section of this Newsletter is an ideal column for you to publish your new endeavors and for your research center to get to be known more among the research community. You may also take part by writing a guest editorial, reporting recent activities at your SMCS local chapter.

If you are yet to become an IEEE member, I encourage you to apply for the membership, and take this opportunity to join SMC Society and actively involve in our society activities. Half-Year-Dues-Period for this year that allows you to join IEEE or one of the societies pay just one half the normal dues rate is in place starting from this month.

We have successfully concluded the 2004 IEEE International Conference on Networking, Sensing and Control (ICNSC’04) in Taipei. As the General Chair of this inaugural conference fully sponsored by SMCS, I take this opportunity to convey my gratitude to every individual who enthusiastically volunteered including the track chairs and reviewers for their constant dedication, time and efforts, and for many other related tasks. For an inaugural conference, it was a highly successful program. Technical papers covered a wide breadth of information from research to applications. ICNSC’05 has been planed to be held in March, 2005, in Tucson, Arizona, with conference theme being “Intelligent Networking and Systems”. SMCS’s flagship conference for this year will be in The Hague, Netherlands – October 10-13. To check out for more information about SMCS sponsored and in-cooperated conferences, please go to the section “Conferences” within this Newsletter and use the links therein.

I eagerly expect your contributions, comments and suggestions to the IEEE SMCS e-Newsletter as it is your input that is most vital for the furtherance of this publication.
